LGC Codebase Insight - Version 1.0.0

Reasoning about software through real-world codebases.


Why Codebase Insight exists

Most students learn programming through:

  • Tutorials
  • Step-by-step courses
  • Small, isolated examples

Real software does not look like that.

Real software requires:

  • Reading unfamiliar repositories
  • Understanding structure, ownership, and flow
  • Reasoning about why code is written a certain way
  • Explaining systems before modifying them

Codebase Insight exists to make codebases the primary medium of learning.


Core idea

You don’t understand software by writing code first.
You understand software by reasoning through existing codebases.

In this system:

  • Codebases are the way of learning
  • Reasoning is the skill being developed
  • Tools exist only to support understanding

What is Codebase Insight?

Codebase Insight is a reasoning-first learning system that focuses on:

  • Reading real-world OSS codebases
  • Understanding architecture and structure
  • Tracing control flow and ownership
  • Identifying patterns and boundaries
  • Explaining systems clearly (teach-back)

It is designed primarily for students, while remaining useful for any serious learner.


What this project is NOT

This project is not:

  • A tutorial platform
  • A code generation tool
  • An online IDE
  • A shortcut to “build projects fast”

There is intentionally no automatic code writing.

Understanding comes before implementation.


How learning happens here

Codebase Insight follows a simple reasoning loop.

1. Read

Open a real codebase and explore folders, files, and structure.

2. Observe

Identify entry points, responsibilities, abstractions, and boundaries.

3. Reason

Ask questions such as:

  • Why does this abstraction exist?
  • What problem is this structure solving?
  • What breaks if this is changed?

4. Extract

Understand:

  • Architectural patterns
  • Dependency relationships
  • Design tradeoffs

5. Explain

Describe the system clearly in your own words.

Understanding is verified through teach-back reasoning.

Tools may assist.
Reasoning leads.


Role of tools and AI

Tools and AI exist only to support reasoning.

They may:

  • Help analyze existing code
  • Assist with "why" and "what if" questions
  • Validate explanations

They do not:

  • Generate full implementations
  • Replace human thinking
  • Turn learning into copy-paste

Version Roadmap

Version 1 — Insight Learning

Focus: understanding curated OSS codebases

Features:

  • Architecture explanations
  • Entry points and responsibilities
  • Folder structure reasoning
  • Pattern and tradeoff explanations

No AI generation.

Goal: build reasoning foundations.


Version 2 — Insight Doubt

Students can ask architecture questions.

The system will:

  • Retrieve context from known codebases
  • Use RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation)
  • Provide explanations with repository references

Goal: clarify conceptual doubts using real systems.


Version 3 — Insight Evaluation

Students explain architecture decisions.

The system evaluates reasoning.

Example tasks:

  • Why is this file structured this way?
  • Why does this abstraction exist?

Goal: verify understanding through feedback.
