Access root node

Heya,

I try to filter the tree, for that i need to be able to manually treverse the tree. but I see no way to retrieve the root node, and therefor any other node. 
Am I missing something?

Also it would be great if we could derive an object with its position, so its not nescessary to redundantly store the position in the object itself.
