No longer works (IR Receive part) on Particle Photon OS 1.5.0

Had been using this on older OS versions (even 1.4.4) and it all seemed to work. When I went to change a remote code, and recompiled, the OS updated to 1.5.0 (oops) and now the device goes to red SOS after connecting to the cloud. I have been unsuccessful in reverting to old OS version, so I had to take the IR Receive part out of my routine.

I tried a modified version "DAIRremote", with the same issue.

Reason seems to be in this function

The timer interrupt is enabled and started before setting the pinMode() although the first instruction in the ISR is digitalRead().
Setting pinMode() earlier solves the issue.
